Ahupe Ghat trek from Khopiwali is ascending and most interesting trek. It is said that people used this route to get down from Ghat to access Konkan Kalyan region. As it is not a fort or a famous place just historical route and now the best way to get into nature. Ahupe is the village on top and road is available from Pune side.
If you are bored with the crowded trekking places near Mumbai and Pune then this one is highly recommended to connect with nature.

Drive to the base village
Ravi and I started our journey early in the morning with the aim of the one-day return plan. We took the following route – Navi Mumbai – Panvel – Chowk – Karjat – Mhasa – Khopiwali. It took more than 2 hours to reach the base village. Khopiwali is just 2.5 km ahead of the base village of Gorakhgad i.e. Dehri Village. Last time we took the same road for Bhimashankar trek.
The base of Gorakhgad Fort
We have been to the Gorakhgad fort trek before but we were unaware of the best trekking trail near to it. Following the same route, we reached Dehri and met Hamid Bhai – the local guide of Gorakhgad fort. We asked for the guidance and he told us to just follow the single trail. At his place, we had an amazing breakfast with hot tea. We parked our car at Khopiwali village near the temple.
Ravi asked a few villagers about the route and time required to ascend. We started walking in the direction of the pointed gorge. We were still confused about the direction but such things always make it more interesting and more importantly makes you an explorer.
Farmers of Khopiwali
We came out of the village and met farmers on the way. They were thrashing out the rice. The picture reminded us of our native place. Reminded of the peaceful life of the village. I always wanted to sleep on Charpai bed (Khatiya) under the big tree located on the farm.
Jungle route of Ahupe Ghat Trek
After crossing the farms, we entered the woods. As per the guidance, we were walking in the direction of the pointed gorge. Till now, it was a simple cakewalk.
Though we planned to start early and finish early, we were late. It was winter, but Sun was shining high and thus started to heat up. While walking we came across the stream. Water was not potable but we refreshed ourselves and took the halt. These halts are really memorable. You talk to your buddy; you get to relax amidst the peaceful nature listening to the chirping sound. Apart from that, it is complete peace of mind – a much-needed break from the hectic life of Mumbai.
Amazing Trail walk
Very unique path structure we found and clicked during Ahupe Ghat Trek. Now, the actual hike started. Surrounding was getting greener and denser. We hiked up keeping the duo of Machindragad & Gorakhgad on the right side.
Since there was no water source available during the hike, we were sipping a bit and saving for the rest of the day. Suddenly, we listened to the sound of people especially kids. Within no time, they hiked up to us. And discussion started, everyone relaxed in the dense forest trail. These people were returning from their relatives’ home.
We clicked amazing shots. Ravi was the poser and as usual, I was the photographer. There was no network and thus no disturbance. We walked after the local family but we were not able to catch up with them. As said by them, it’s the right path and now onwards there will not be any deviation. So, we kept trekking slowly.
Ahupe Ghat Trek Top
After 2 hours, we reached the top of Ahupe Ghat. We completed the ascend of Ahupe Ghat Trek. View from the top was amazing. Sahyadri never disappoints trekkers. Beauty during the monsoon is said to be 10 times better than in the winter. However, you can go for Ahupe ghat trek in all season.
The Sound Sleep
We did our photography and took out tiffin for lunch. As we started early, we had Diwali snacks stuff in the tiffin boxes instead of a regular meal. We finished it off and rested for while under the mango tree. The soundest sleep that you get after trekking that too in nature under the tree. My dream was kind of fulfilled just that charpai (Khatiya) was missing.
Descending trek of Ahupe Ghat
It was the single route so was bit easy to backtrack till the stream. After coming down, we looked back and were happy to accomplish the Ahupe Ghat Trek. Refreshed ourselves in the stream and started walking towards the village. It was getting dark. Immediately, we left from the Khopiwali village. We drove back to the home with a lot of memories.
